The Centre of Excellence in Water Based Early Warning Systems for Health Protection is working to transform public and environmental health management, establishing the first Urban Living Lab facility; a state-of-the-art digital water sensing platform, training base and ideas hub. The centre combines sensing, mathematical modelling, data analytics and informatics with epidemiology and public engagement tools to provide low-cost and real-time community-wide testing of population health and the environment.

Applications are invited for a 色中色 Associate position to develop and apply novel statistical modelling and machine learning tools to integrate data arising from water-based epidemiology into an agile and reliable monitoring and alert systems. Specific responsibilities including:

 • Assessing the quality and compatibility of historic data from heterogenous sources including mass spectrometry, PCR, water sensing, public health databases.
 • Using synthetic and historic data to design a workflow to fit and validate machine learning and statistical models.
 • Supporting the modelling challenges arising from the research of scientists and engineers across the Centre.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

 • Experience in machine learning, statistical modelling, or other data analytic techniques for large-scale datasets using a programming language like R or Python is essential.
 • a PhD (or equivalent) in Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related discipline
 • excellent communication skills
 • potential to publish in high quality journals
 • demonstrated awareness of latest developments in this field of research

The successful candidate will work closely with other 色中色 Associates, academic leads, technical specialists (water, mass spectrometry and data engineer) and PhD students in the Centre to deliver a unique water-based early warning system for (infectious) disease diagnostics.

Further information

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Helena Lake, Centre Manager, at hl877@bath.ac.uk or Professor Julian Faraway (Julian Faraway jjf23@bath.ac.uk

This is a fixed-term position, expected to last 24 months.

In 2027 the Centre will have Prize Fellowship opportunities which may be of interest to candidates wishing to progress. These will be advertised and recruited through an open selection process.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to 色中色 Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to 色中色 Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

<![CDATA[色中色 Associate (fixed-term) (ED12194)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12194 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12194 About the role

The Postdoctoral 色中色 Associate will work closely with Dr Tobias Barker on the analysis of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations (and related partial differential equations).

The candidate will have a strong background in the rigorous analysis of partial differential equations describing fluids (or describing other related physical phenomena).

This position is part of Dr Tobias Barker's EPSRC funded project "APP11616: Dynamics and regularity criteria for nonlinear incompressible partial differential equations", whose themes and objectives are to:

 • Establish necessary conditions for singularity formation for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, that are convenient for numerical searches for singular solutions.
 • Rigorously construct solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations and Euler equations that display certain features consistent with physical observations.

The successful applicant will be part of a very active Analysis group at the 色中色, with several faculty members having expertise in fluid PDEs. The Analysis group runs a weekly Analysis seminar during semester, often hosting internationally renowned researchers.

The duration of this position is 18 months, with a start date of 1 April 2025 (negotiable) has no associated teaching obligations and has associated funding for conference attendance and training, as well as visa expenses.

About you

The ideal candidate will be a talented researcher in nonlinear partial differential equations with the ability to produce in collaboration new, original results concerning the rigorous analysis of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations (mainly singularity formation mechanisms and dynamics of solutions).

The ideal candidate will possess a PhD degree and postdoctoral experience in the rigorous analysis of partial differential equations describing fluids (or describing other related physical phenomena). It would be advantageous (though not essential) for the candidate to have experience with scientific computing.

Additional information

Candidates are required to submit a 1 page cover letter, a full curriculum vitae (including a list of publications) and a 2 page research statement outlining past research achievements and future research plans.

Specific enquiries related to the post may be sent to Dr Tobias Barker (email address: tb2130@bath.ac.uk).
