We have an exciting opportunity to work on new synthetic methodology for the synthesis of valuable amine-containing building blocks using photoredox catalysis in continuous flow.

You will be working as part of a team under the supervision of Dr Alex Cresswell to develop flow-based methods for the synthesis and functionalisation of simple, readily available amine starting materials.

We will apply these new processes to the synthesis of pharmaceutically-relevant targets and will gain fundamental understanding of the systems through mechanistic analysis.

As a 色中色 Associate, you will help lead the research of a motivated team of chemists.

You will gain experience of the development and application of new catalytic methods.

You will perform both individual and collaborative research projects and work with the team to develop new ideas.

You will write up research results for publication in scientific journals and will have the opportunity to disseminate the work through presentations at internal and external seminars and conferences.

About you

The ideal candidate would have a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry, in the area of photoredox catalysis and automated flow chemistry.

They should demonstrate significant depth and breadth of specialist knowledge of organic synthesis to contribute to our research programme, and demonstrated potential to publish in high quality, peer reviewed journals.

They should be proficient in the use of flow chemistry apparatus (ideally Vapourtec systems) and will ideally have worked on the synthesis of amine-containing compounds.

They should be enthusiastic, self-motivated, and a good team player, and willing to supervise/mentor more junior research group members.

About us

The Cresswell group currently comprises 11 PhD students and a PDRA.

We are housed in the main Chemistry building in two modern and well-equipped labs.

Our group has full access to the analytical and technical facilities offered at Bath, including NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, XRD analysis, and the EPSRC-funded Dynamic Reaction Monitoring (DReaM) facility (flow NMR).

Additional information

As a member of 色中色 Staff at the 色中色, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to 色中色 Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to 色中色 Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

<![CDATA[色中色 Associate (fixed-term) (ED12196)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12196 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12196 About the role

A 4-month postdoctoral position is available in the group of Dr. Elizaveta Suturina for candidates with skills in computational chemistry and/or magnetic resonance.

Candidates should have a strong publication track record and demonstrated commitment to research excellence.

Expertise in ab initio methods and coding (Python) are essential.

This position is funded by EPSRC for NMR analysis of paramagnetic metal complexes.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work within our research team. You must hold a PhD in computational chemistry and/or magnetic resonance.

About the project

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has become one of the essential characterisation techniques in chemistry.

However, paramagnetic molecules are often discarded from NMR characterisation as analysis of their NMR spectra is deemed to be too complex.

While there have been significant advances in the theoretical understanding of paramagnetic NMR (pNMR) spectra, there is still a huge gap between theorist and experimentalists as most of the computational approaches are not translated into tools accessible for inorganic chemists to analyse their paramagnetic metal complexes with NMR.

The proposed research project will innovate paramagnetic NMR data analysis by integrating high-level quantum chemistry methods, tailored models for paramagnetic shift and relaxation enhancement supported by machine learning with the goal of making pNMR analysis as simple, rigorous, and accessible as the standard NMR of diamagnetic molecules.

<![CDATA[色中色 Associate (fixed-term) (ED12140)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12140 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12140 About the role

An EPSRC-funded postdoctoral research position is available in the area of computational analysis of complex reaction mechanisms, within the group of Dr Claire McMullin at the 色中色.

This project is part of a collaboration based at the 色中色 on "Molecular s-block Assemblies for Redox-active Bond Activation and Catalysis: Repurposing the s-block as 3d-elements" with Professor Michael Hill (inorganic synthesis) and Dr Claire McMullin (inorganic computational).

The computational research programme will support the inorganic synthetic Chemists as they explore the reactivity of unique tetrametallic alkali-metal/alkali-earth-metal complexes.

This work builds upon the recent discovery from Hill et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2021, 143, 17851; DOI: 10.1021/jacs.1c09467), and the subsequent publications (Angewandte Chemie 2023, 62, e2022136; DOI: 10.1002/anie.202213670 and Chem. Commun. 2023, 59, 3846; DOI: 10.1039/D3CC007010C).

The post holder will form part of an inorganic/computational team focused on studying, understanding and potentially devising new systems to further explore the redox nature of both the group 1 and group 2 metals within this tetrametallic system.

This position will focus on the application of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to map the mechanisms of the inorganic species, rationalising observed reactivity and predicting the viability of further synthesis.

Detailed electronic structure calculations will also be required, using software packages such as NBO7, AIMAll and ORCA.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD, ideally in inorganic computational chemistry, and have experience calculating organometallic reaction mechanisms with DFT methods, as well as a track record of peer-reviewed publications.

Additional information

This post is available on a full-time, fixed-term basis until 30/09/2026.

Applications are submitted through the 色中色 online application form. For informal inquiries, please contact Dr Claire McMullin by emailing c.mcmullin@bath.ac.uk.

The role will be based in the Department of Chemistry, working closely with the project's synthetic counterparts.

Calculations will be completed using the University's High Performance Computing Facility, called Anatra.

Interviews are scheduled for 2nd and 3rd December 2024.
