<![CDATA[色中色 Associate (fixed-term) (ED12072)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12072 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12072 About the role

We are looking for an adventurous and talented researcher to fill a postdoctoral position as part of the £7.3M EPSRC Programme Grant, MaThRad (Mathematical Theory of Radiation Transport).

This five-year interdisciplinary programme of research will use modern mathematical methods from probability theory, advanced Monte Carlo methods and inverse problems to develop novel approaches to the theory and application of radiation transport.

The programme grant is held jointly between the University of Warwick, 色中色, University of Cambridge, University College Hospital, and the National Physical Laboratory. This position will be based at the 色中色.

Nuclear technology is based around the principle of how radiation particles interact with materials.

Whilst the microscopic behaviour of such systems is well understood, the degree of inhomogeneity involved means that the ability to predict the flux of particles through complex physical environments on the macroscopic (human) scale is a significant challenge.

This lies at the heart of how we design, regulate and operate some of the most important technologies for the twenty-first century. These include:

 • building new reactors (fission and fusion) and de-commissioning old ones,
 • medical radiation therapy
 • establishing novel space technologies through e.g. the development of space-bound mini-reactors for off-world bases and protection for high-tech equipment exposed to high-energy radiation such as satellites and spacesuits.
 • accurate prediction of how radiation interacts with surrounding matter is based on modelling through the Boltzmann transport equation.

MaThRad is pursuing an interactive exploration of foundational, translational and application-driven research; developing predictive mathematical models with quantifiable accuracy and software prototypes, ready for real-world implementation in the energy, health care and space exploration nuclear industries.

As a member of 色中色 Staff at the 色中色, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year

About you

The successful candidate will work with to improve our theoretical understanding of current Monte Carlo algorithms used in a range of applications relating to Radiation Transport, and to develop novel methods which can improve the methods used by our academic and industrial partners.

Experience of conducting high quality research on interacting particle systems or rare event simulation will be highly desirable.

Willingness to explore the interaction with ad-hoc and interdisciplinary approaches is highly desirable.

No prior knowledge of the application area is expected, however a willingness to engage with applications is essential, as well as to collaborate with scientists who are not mathematicians.

 • You will conduct individual and collaborative research of high quality in an appropriate area of mathematics and/or statistics and its applications in Monte Carlo methods for radiation transport modelling.
 • You will continually update your knowledge and understanding in the wider area of the project to inform research activity.
 • You will publish in high quality peer reviewed journals appropriate to the discipline.
 • You will disseminate the research at national and international conferences, e.g. by presentations.
 • You will be involved in regular contact with industrial partners in the energy, space, and healthcare sectors.
 • You will assist the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators with project management: e.g. organising meetings and corresponding/discussing with partners.
 • You will identify sources of funding and contribute to securing funds for project related research.
 • You will develop research objectives and proposals that support the MaThRad agenda for your own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required.

You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature commensurate with the grade of appointment as reasonably required by your line manager.

Additional information

Please submit a CV and a cover letter, indicating how your experience aligns with the project, and outlining any other relevant experience of researching in group or interdisciplinary settings.

Note that we currently operated an anonymous shortlisting stage. You should answer the shortlisting questions anonymously, and also attach a CV and cover letter, which will be considered following anonymous shortlisting.

Candidates wishing to have an informal discussion regarding the role should contact Alexander Cox (a.m.g.cox@bath.ac.uk), Tristan Pryer (tmp38@bath.ac.uk) or Emma Horton (emma.horton@warwick.ac.uk).

<![CDATA[色中色 Associate (fixed-term) (ED12196)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12196 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12196 About the role

A 4-month postdoctoral position is available in the group of Dr. Elizaveta Suturina for candidates with skills in computational chemistry and/or magnetic resonance.

Candidates should have a strong publication track record and demonstrated commitment to research excellence.

Expertise in ab initio methods and coding (Python) are essential.

This position is funded by EPSRC for NMR analysis of paramagnetic metal complexes.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work within our research team. You must hold a PhD in computational chemistry and/or magnetic resonance.

About the project

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has become one of the essential characterisation techniques in chemistry.

However, paramagnetic molecules are often discarded from NMR characterisation as analysis of their NMR spectra is deemed to be too complex.

While there have been significant advances in the theoretical understanding of paramagnetic NMR (pNMR) spectra, there is still a huge gap between theorist and experimentalists as most of the computational approaches are not translated into tools accessible for inorganic chemists to analyse their paramagnetic metal complexes with NMR.

The proposed research project will innovate paramagnetic NMR data analysis by integrating high-level quantum chemistry methods, tailored models for paramagnetic shift and relaxation enhancement supported by machine learning with the goal of making pNMR analysis as simple, rigorous, and accessible as the standard NMR of diamagnetic molecules.

<![CDATA[色中色 Associate in Atmospheric Dynamics (FM12188)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM12188 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM12188 About the role

We are seeking a 色中色 Associate to study how the lower and middle atmosphere drive and control the dynamics of the Earth's upper mesosphere, lower thermosphere, and ionosphere (MLTI), a critical boundary region linking the atmosphere below and space above! You will primarily focus on the role of atmospheric gravity waves in this driving.

The MLTI is by far the least-understood part of the atmospheric system, and our knowledge of how it varies over time and space is very limited. You will support the NERC-funded DRIIVE and MesoS2D projects, two major projects aimed at understanding this complex atmospheric region. Both projects are multi-institution programmes combining novel observations and cutting-edge atmospheric models to characterise and understand the MLTI system.

Working with colleagues at a wide range of UK and international institutions, you will use NASA and ESA satellites, supported by ground-based instruments and reanalysis output, to measure the effects of small-scale atmospheric ('gravity') waves. You'll examine these measurements to identify the signatures of phenomena such as local and regional weather, the output of the sun, El Nino and the Madden-Julian Oscillation. You will compare these observed effects to simulations run using the leading WACCM weather model, and to ionospheric data from the state-of-the-art EISCAT-3D radar. The ultimate goal of both projects is to drive a step-change in our knowledge of and ability to predict the MLTI, and you will play a key role in delivering this goal.

This position is available full time, fixed term with an expected end date of 26th August 2025.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

 • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject area
 • An understanding of atmospheric dynamics and/or atmospheric remote sensing
 • The ability to organise and prioritise own workload
 • Proficiency in analysis and interpretation of geophysical scientific data

Further information

As a member of 色中色 Staff at the 色中色, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

You will join a growing atmospheric dynamics research group led by Prof Wright, and work with colleagues studying topics as diverse as the triggering of dramatic sudden stratospheric warming events, ways to improve the accuracy of innovative weather models, and identifying techniques to better predict extreme hurricanes and typhoons.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Professor Corwin Wright at cw785@bath.ac.uk or Dr Marwa Almowafy at ma3091@bath.ac.uk. Please ensure your application is submitted through our website.

<![CDATA[色中色 Associate - Ionospheric Radio Propagation (FM12162)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM12162 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM12162 About the role

We are seeking 色中色 Associates to study large-to-small scale ionospheric irregularities by utilising new evidence from EISCAT_3D together with evidence from any other relevant datasets as well as to model and characterise propagation disturbances induced by ionospheric irregularities on radio signals (for example, satellites and radio objects).

The NERC-funded FINESSE project will exploit a new and unique (also NERC-funded) incoherent scatter radar system, EISCAT_3D, located in northern Scandinavia and capable of 3D imaging of the ionosphere.

The UK along with the rest of the world is becoming increasingly dependent on technological systems, such as satellite telecommunications and satellite navigation, that are at risk from adverse space weather conditions. This risk manifests through plasma instabilities in the ionosphere which originate electron density irregularities that induce propagation disturbances on radio signals such as from GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems).

One of the main objectives of the FINESSE project is to determine the origin of large-to-small scale ionospheric irregularities, to understand how this leads to scintillation of radio signals at various frequencies, and how this impacts applications.

Your responsibilities will include:

 • studying large-to-small scale irregularities and to model their propagation disturbances (i.e., scintillation, temporal TEC fluctuations);
 • studying the impact of ionospheric propagation disturbances on applications and how EISCAT_3D could be utilised in space weather alerts;
 • conducting individual and collaborative research within this project;
 • contributing to the execution of the project;
 • analysing data from EISCAT_3D, ground and spaceborne GNSS, KAIRA, scintillation monitors, ionosondes, incoherent scatter radars and other instruments of relevance;
 • disseminating project results (by means of project reports, peer-reviewed publications);
 • actively participating in project meetings as well as Departmental and Group meetings;

Within this role you will work in a dynamic environment whilst building your research profile in space weather science. You will be supported to travel to meetings and to share your research with the wider community as opportunities arise throughout the project.

There are two positions available, both full time, fixed term from 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

 • a PhD or equivalent in GNSS, space physics, space engineering, or any other area closely related to the project;
 • familiarity with GNSS data;
 • familiarity with ionospheric radio science (for example, incoherent scatter radars, propagation effects due to TEC and scintillation);
 • ability to carry out research work and to disseminate results;
 • ability to work in a team;
 • passion and self-motivation

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to 色中色 Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to 色中色 Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

About us

We are a research-intensive university with a physics/engineering Group in Space, Telecommunications and Atmospheric 色中色 (STAR). STAR follows from the Centre for Space, Atmospheric and Oceanic Science (CSAOS), with activities in this area starting in 1998 at Bath. STAR Members have leading expertise in antennas and propagation, communication and navigation systems (including GNSS), ionospheric radio science, remote sensing, earth observation, signal processing, image processing, and data assimilation.
